Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Multiplayer: Reusing Tech from Mainline Entries

Horizon fans have something to look forward to besides the rumored PC port of the sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. Guerrilla Games has confirmed that it is developing a multiplayer game set in the same universe, which was first revealed at The Game Awards 2022.

However, not much is known about this mysterious project, except that it is a AAA RPG that will use some of the same technology as the single-player Horizon games. This means that we can expect a similar level of graphical fidelity, as well as familiar world and quest systems.

But how will Guerrilla Games translate the Horizon gameplay to a multiplayer setting? That is the big question that remains unanswered. Will it be a massive online game where players can explore and interact with each other in a shared world, like STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC? Or will it be a more focused cooperative game where players can team up and tackle missions together, like Path of Exile?

We don’t know yet, but we can speculate based on some clues from the job listings that Guerrilla Games has posted. For instance, one of the roles in the game code systems team involves working on data synchronization, balance, and infrastructure scalability. These are all important aspects of online multiplayer games, especially if they involve large numbers of players and complex interactions.

Another role in the same team involves working on “repurposing existing world and quest systems for multiplayer.” This suggests that Guerrilla Games wants to maintain continuity between the single-player and multiplayer Horizon games and that the multiplayer game will have some form of narrative and progression.

Of course, these are just hints and not definitive answers. We will have to wait for more official information from Guerrilla Games to get a clearer picture of what the Horizon multiplayer game will be like. But one thing is certain: it will be a long wait. The game is still in early development stages, and no release date has been announced yet. So don’t hold your breath for this one, but keep an eye out for any updates.
