New revelations have indicated that AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor won’t support overclocking which is a first. The chipmaker has allowed overclocking across all but the absolute lowest-end processors and motherboards. The decision to block overclocking (if true) will mark a massive change in the company’s policy, something that is going to certainly piss the community off.
In addition to this, a source (above) has also claimed that the octa-core Zen 3 processor with 64 MB if stacked L3 cache won’t support Precision Boost Overdrive or PBO either. This feature is essentially the equivalent of automated all-core overclocking which improves performance in heavily threaded workloads such as rendering, encoding, file compression, and video editing.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, as per AMD’s official specs doesn’t seem to support overclocking or the Ryzen Master Utility for now. This means the finer-grained functions of existing Zen processors won’t be available on the 3D stacked chip. This is most likely a complication of the 3D stacked L3 cache which is also a first for the industry and has forced the chipmaker to reduce the boost clock of the processor.
