AMD’s Overall x86 CPU Share (by Units Sold) Reaches 22.5% in Q2 2021: YoY Gain of 4.2%, 1.9% QoQ Increase

AMD’s overall x86 CPU market share rose by +1.8% QoQ and +4.2% YoY to reach yet another all-time high of 22.5% according to figures provided by Mercury Research. Keep in mind that these figures represent the market share in terms of units sold rather than in terms of revenue which is a fair bit lower.

The bulk of this change came from the server market, where AMD gained 3.7% YoY and 0.6% QoQ, pushing the chipmaker’s share to nearly 10% for the first time since the days of Opteron. The Epyc Milan CPUs have been increasingly popular among cloud providers, most notably Google, Tencent, Alibaba as well as some lesser-known names such as Atos, Supermicro, Tyan. and QCT.

Competition in the mobile segment was intense, but the company managed to increase its share by nearly 2% over the last quarter, with the yearly figures remaining largely flat.

Finally, the desktop market saw Intel stretching its muscles, as AMD primarily focused on strategic segments (mobile, gaming notebooks, commercial, etc) as a result of the ongoing semiconductor shortages. As a result, the former’s Pentium, Celeron, Core i3, and i5 products were much more successful than AMD’s dated Zen 2 offerings in the same segments. (Viagra)
