Xbox Series X Could Run Steam via “Windows Mode” [Rumor]

It appears that the upcoming Xbox Series X is going to go a step further in trying to merge Xbox and PC Gaming. According to rumors, Microsoft is planning to include a “Windows Mode” in this new console. If true, this could give the Next-Gen Xbox console a major advantage over the Sony PS5. Steam has a ton of exclusives, sure, they may not be multi-million dollar titles like the ones Sony has, but they are still unique in their own right. Not to mention all the other advantages of PC Gaming.

Technically speaking, this isn’t all that hard to implement. Xbox and Windows both use the DirectX API to run games, unlike Sony which uses a modified form of the OpenSource FreeBSD 9.0. So installing Windows 10 on the new Xbox won’t be hard. Seeing that the console will be powered by AMD’s Zen 2 CPU cores and the 2nd Gen RDNA GPU architecture, it should be possible to run it like a regular PC.

The X series does indeed look like a desktop PC and if it indeed supports Windows 10, it will have major implications for the gaming industry: Cross-Play, a hybrid-platform, versatility and it will even let us test the game-optimizations for various titles. It’s not clear whether there will be official support from Steam and other big publishers for the Xbox version of Steam, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Lastly, keep in mind this is just a rumor and hasn’t been verified as of now. So take it with a pinch of salt as usual.
