Xbox Series S was the Best Selling Console in India in March

The Xbox Series S was the most sold console in India last month as per a report from IGN India. This is despite the fact that Sony dominates the console market in India, with a market share of 75-90%. So, what exactly happened? Well, two reasons: Lack of PS5 stocks and Game Pass. Sony has been largely ignoring the South Asian markets, primarily because the overall sales in the region are much lower than say, Japan, the US, or Europe.

On the other hand, the Xbox Series S has been restocked relatively frequently with its economical price being a primary contributing factor to coercing customers into opting for one. The Series S is available across various retails for a price of 30,000 to 40,000 INR while the PS5 and Series X are largely out of stock. The official MSRP of the PS5 in India is 49,999 which translates to nearly $700.

The recent Bethesda acquisition and the inclusion of more and more games into the Xbox Game Pass subscription service is another enticing factor. In India, the Game Pass for the Xbox consoles is priced at just under 500 bucks which is less than $7. For less than $7, you get access to over a hundred games for an entire month.

At the same time, this doesn’t mean that gamers are abandoning Sony in scores. In fact, these days the best-selling products are the ones that are actually available for purchase. According to most retailers, the Xbox Series S sold the most because it was the only console available. A manager for a large electronics chain said: “We’d have sold the same if not more if we had the Series X instead.”
