Now that three-quarters of 2022 is over and has already treated us to many beautiful titles. Now that the first nine months are over, it is time to take stock. These are the ten best games of 2022 so far.
For this list of the best 2022 so far, we have specifically listed the games that will appear this year for the first time. This means that game series are not included in this list. We have also excluded DLCs and expansions from this list. Furthermore, we have also excluded the slots, table games, and cards available at non GamStop casinos. Although most of these games are easy to learn and attractive, they appeal to a certain group of players who are looking for money in the first place, not all players.
8. Pokemon Legends Arceus
Pokémon Legends Arceus came out earlier this year with many bravadoes and managed to impress. For the first time, a mainline title was released that put a real twist on the well-known Pokémon formula by shifting the focus to catching the little critters and exploring the open areas that were made available. A touching story and cool music completed the experience that easily kept players entertained for decades.
That’s not to say the game was perfect. Graphically, the game was still relatively weak, and the performance of the game was disappointing in some places. Still, it didn’t stop critics from giving good scores because the revamped gameplay loop was precisely what the series needed.
7. LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga
LEGO games sometimes miss the mark, but that was certainly not the case with LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga. The long wait was rewarded with a reinvention of the games that deserves nothing but praise. The simple games for kids decided to grow up by adding a little more depth to the battles and environments.
With numerous planets from the Star Wars universe and even more side missions and extras, players were treated to the complete collection of Star Wars stories ever. Anyone who is even somewhat charmed by the series will steal a fantastic experience for themselves. You can also share it with a friend (or family member) makes the adventure all the more special.
6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
Beat ’em up games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge isn’t for everyone. Still, it cannot be denied that Tribute Games has delivered one of the best games of 2022 so far. The retro style is reminiscent of a simple time when we only worried about 8 or 16-bit while lovingly enjoying the TMNT cartoons.
Shredder’s Revenge is a love letter to the 80s, the period when the Turtles had their heyday, and it shows from all sides. For example, the voices from the 1987 series return, the music is delivered by Tee Lopes, who has brought in numerous talents for additional music, and the game itself plays like a classic beat ’em up. The latter will not be to everyone’s taste, making the game a bit more difficult to recommend for every player.
5. Tunic
It was doubtful for a long time that Tunic would score high. The title of Andrew Shouldice, who made the game on his own, was already revealed years ago, but a release itself was not forthcoming for a long time. That finally changed in 2022, and the wait was more than worth it.
For example, the challenging combat offers reason to continue playing to train yourself, while the game initially seems to offer a Zelda-like adventure. The cute art style and fox that shines in the lead role are mainly responsible for this. The story could be worked out a bit better, but this game is a big star in almost all other areas.
4. Neon White
Neon White can safely be named one of the bigger surprises of the year. This indie title was released in mid-June and has enjoyed smiles from everyone who started the game. The game hooks players in an addictive way through the flashy mix of a first-person shooter that lets players run speedily.
The mix creates an addictive experience that quickly makes you forget all other aspects. The story is nothing to write home about. Still, fans don’t care because nothing is as nice as setting a high score (despite being broken again a few hours later).
3. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the first Kirby game in a long time that is loved again. The Pink Ball has had quite a few titles that miss the mark, but the charm of Kirby and the Forgotten Land simply cannot be denied. Kirby catches on surprisingly well in a 3D environment with numerous new features.
The title is still not one of the hardest, but it matters less this time. Going through the 3D platformer with crazy shapes and secrets keeps you captivated throughout the game. In that regard, Kirby has hit the mark by grabbing a mouthful of darts and spitting them all over the board!
2. Total War: Warhammer 3
The most recent release in the Total War: Warhammer series is arguably the best. This blend of fantasy with turn-based strategy is a hit with fans and critics alike, and it’s easy to see why. The game delivers on every aspect that fans have dreamed of.
For example, the scale is larger than ever, while the blood flies around your ears during large-scale warfare. All this is in a wonderfully elaborated fantasy setting that characterizes the Warhammer series. With nine Legendary Lords to choose from and plenty of single and multiplayer modes, fans can’t believe their luck.
1. Rogue Legacy 2
The wait for Rogue Legacy 2 was long but well worth it. The sequel to the much-loved indie that garnered a lot of fans in 2013 resembles the original in many ways, and that’s a good thing. Games in the roguelike genre are generally very similar but differ in crucial aspects of the gameplay. Rogue Legacy 2 doesn’t make this mistake.
Instead, studio Cellar Door Games builds on what worked in the first volume. There are plenty of new classes, upgrade mechanics, and secrets to discover. Add to that an improved art style and music that stays in your head again, and you simply have one of the best titles of 2022 in your hands.
