Samsung Teases PM1743 SSD w/ (Theoretical) Speeds of up to 15.7 GB/s

Samsung has provided more details of its first PCIe 5.0 capable SSD, the PM1743 aimed at data centers and servers. The high-speed SSD leverages TLC V6 NAND flash technology with a rated endurance of 1 DWPD (Drive Writes Per Day), allowing for full writes of 1-2 TB daily depending on the drive capacity. It’s equipped with a PCIe 5.0 x4 slot or two 2×2 (dual) slots, with a power consumption of up to 40W.

The Samsung PM1743 SSD will use the new EDSHH (Enterprise & Data Center SSD Form Factor) standard E3.S, with 14 single port or 22 dual-port interfaces allowing for a maximum (theoretical) bandwidth of 16 GB/s, with an effective speed of around 14 GB/s if you take the overhead into account.

It is expected to be officially released in the second quarter of 2022, right around the time Intel launches its next-gen Sapphire Rapids-SP processors with support for PCIe 5.0, CXL, and DDR5 memory. It’s worth noting the Alder Lake-S desktop CPUs will only support PCIe 5.0 at the SoC, and not the chipset level. As such, there will be only one x16 slot (for the GPU) or one x8 slot (for the GPU), and two x4 slots (for SSDs) with PCIe 5.0 support.

AMD’s Epyc Genoa and Raphael processors launching in late 2022/early 2023 should support PCIe 5.0 at both the chipset and SoC level, although the latter may skimp out on it.
