Samsung Edges Past Intel as the Largest Semiconductor Company, AMD Records Highest Percentage Revenue Gain

Korean semiconductor giant Samsung has regained its position as the top semi-company (by revenue), dislodging Intel after several years of lagging behind at the second spot. The Korean company recorded a yearly revenue of $73 billion, a notable gain of 28% over the $57 billion revenue figure recorded in 2020. Intel, on the other hand, stagnated with a decline of -0.3% YoY, pulling in $72.5 billion through the course of the pandemic-ridden year.

SK Hynix came in third with a healthy growth of 40% ($36.3 billion) in revenue, followed by Micron and Qualcomm at #4, and #5, respectively. NVIDIA gained one spot, climbing to the #9 rank with yearly revenue of $16.8 billion, a steep increase over the previous year’s $10.6 billion. Out of all the companies, AMD recorded the highest percentage revenue gain, going from $9.6 billion in 2020 to $16.3 billion in 2021. That adds up to a yearly growth of 68.6%, placing Team Red at the tenth spot on the list, up from #14 in 2020.
