Samsung 980 PRO SSD w/ Read Speeds up to 7,000 MB/s Surfaces: 30% Faster than the PS5, Nearly 3x Faster than the XSX

Samsung’s next-gen PCIe 4.0 based SSD, the 980 PRO now has a product page, showing what the monstrous SSD is capable of thanks to the new bus. We are looking at read speeds as high as 7,000 MB/s and write speeds of 5,000 MB/s. That’s 30% faster than the PS5 and nearly 3x faster than the yet to be launched Xbox Series X. In comparison to its predecessor, the 970 PRO, you’re looking at a gain of almost 3x.

Furthermore, the 4K random performance can go up to 1,000,000 IOPS for both read and write. Once again, that’s twice as much as the Samsung 970 PRO which topped out at 500,000 IOPS (random). Samsung will use TLC based memory cells.

The Samsung 980 PRO will be available in three capacities, namely 256GB, 500GB and 1TB similar to its predecessor. At the moment, there’s no word on the pricing and availability, but expect to hear more in the next 2-3 weeks.
