Samsung 8nm Yields Causing Shortage of NVIDIA RTX 30 Series GPUs: RTX 20 Super Production May Have Ended

According to a Digitimes report, the primary reason behind the limited supply of NVIDIA’s RTX 30 series graphics cards is the limited wafer yields at Samsung’s 8nm foundry. Till now, multiple factors have been held responsible for the GPU shortages, including the GDDR6/6X memory supply, die substrates, disruptions in the supply chain, etc, but it appears that poor yields may be the primary reason.

We’ve seen supplies improve with the release of every new Ampere card, primarily because the lower-end cards have smaller, partially disabled dies and therefore, are easier to produce. Meanwhile, the top-end RTX 3080 and 3090 still struggle from severe shortages, with most retailers selling them for twice the MSRP.

At the same time, rumors are floating around indicating that the production of NVIDIA’s RTX 20 series Super cards may have been ended. This includes the higher-end RTX 2080 Super, 2070 Super as well as the 2060 Super. The RTX 2060 and the GTX 16 series are expected to stay in production for the time being, at least till their Ampere replacements are announced. Kindly, take this last bit of info with a pinch of salt as we haven’t been able to confirm it just yet.
