PS4 Sales Drop to Lowest Since Launch as the Next-Gen Consoles Loom: 2nd Most Popular PS

As the sales for the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles have begun, the older consoles have been more or less abandoned by gamers. In Sony’s Q2 earnings report, the PS4 reported its lowest sales for the quarter since the launch in 2013.

Till now, the PS4 has sold just around 3.4 million units, nearly half as much as that during the same period last year (6 million). In fact, this is the worst quarter for the console since its launch in 2013. The initial quarters of 2014 come in second with a total sales figure of 6 million for the first half of the year.

For the time being supply for the next-gen PS5 console is pretty tight and the same is expected to continue till December.

Supply should see a major improvement in the first quarter of 2020 for both the consoles as well as the next-gen computer hardware. Meanwhile, the PS4 continues to be Sony’s second most successful console after the PS2.

It sold around 20% more than the PS1 and 35% more than the PS3. However, it still lags the PS2 by a notable 32% or 37 million units. Analysts expect the PS5 to become the most popular console Sony has ever made, but history is anything to go by, it’ll likely sit between the PS4 and the PS2 with around 120-130 million units during its lifetime.
