PNY Reduces SSD Warranty by Up to 80% to Deter ChiCoin Miners

PNY has reduced the rated endurance of its XLR8 CS3030 SSD lineup by nearly 80%. This means that these drives which are known for their high endurance…will no longer be known by that. Jokes aside, this move can be largely attributed to the increasing demand from crypto-miners (ChiaCoin farmers) and the global shortage of semiconductors that has affected every sphere of the industry.

It’s very likely that the updated SSD lineup uses QLC NAND cell instead of TLC which the original drives used. Strangely, performance remains unchanged with a sequential read and write speed of 3,500 MB/s and 3,100 MB/s which aren’t unheard of with some of the more mature QLC-based media. The drive now has a maximum capacity of 4TB with the PCIe 3. (konahonudivers.com) 0 x4 interface.

Despite the steep reduction in the warranted endurance otherwise known as TBW (Terabytes Written), the model of the SSD hasn’t changed, making it quite difficult to tell the newer variants from the existing ones. However, PNY believes that for any consumer the warranty period will undoubtedly end before the TBW threshold is approached.

Drives sold before the 17th of May, 2021 will stick will the older TBW value while SSDs sold after that will adhere to the reduced TBW warranty.
