NVIDIA’s next-gen GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards won’t support the next-gen PCIe Gen 5 express. The Ada Lovelace GPUs will retain the existing Gen 4 interface used in the contemporary 30 series parts. This is unexpected as the RTX 4080/4090 will adopt the 12PVHPWR 16-pin power connector which is part of the PCIe Gen 5 power connector interface. The high TGP of up to 600W on the RTX 4090 made this a necessity.
The recently launched GeForce RTX 3090 Ti also supports the 12PVHPWR connector, allowing it to draw over 500W of power. Like the Ti, the RTX 4080 and 4090 will come with limited PCIe Gen 5 support. However, this shouldn’t be a problem as the Gen 4 interface already supports a total bandwidth of 64GB/s, or 32GB/s in bi-directional mode.
PCIe Gen 5 which is supported by Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake as well as AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 7000 processors doubles the bandwidth of 128GB/s, or 64GB/s bi-directional.
