NVIDIA RTX 4090 Power Consumption: 450W for the GPU, 40W for Memory, Rest for PCB, etc [Report]

NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4090 will be the GPU-maker’s first SKU to feature a power consumption of over 500W. Most sources place the TBP of the top-end 40 series graphics card between 450W and 600W. German journo Igor Wallossek has estimated the overall TGP/TBP at 600W, with the GPU itself drawing more than the entire RTX 3090 under load (450W). The remaining 150W are slurped by the memory, VRMs, fans, etc. (Xanax)

The GDDR6X memory modules are expected to draw 3.4 W each. Add 12 of those and you get approximately 40W of power for the memory dies. This is still less than the 60W consumed by the RTX 3090’s twelve 12GB modules. The memory VRMs should have an efficiency of around 60-70%, with the GPU core VRMs (NVVDD) reaching 90%. Along with the fans, heatsink, shunts, etc, this comes up to 150W, give or take, constituting the overall 600W figure.

The recently “launched” GeForce RTX 3090 Ti uses the same PCB and traces as the upcoming RTX 4080/4090 graphics cards. With a power draw of over 500W, it allows board partners to test out various cooling solutions for the next-gen Ada Lovelace GPUs. Suffice to say, we’re likely to see plenty of liquid-cooled designs at the top end.
