NVIDIA RTX 3090 AIB Cards may Draw up to 500W w/ Price of $3,000

As per sources, NVIDIA’s RTX 3090 may draw up to 500W of power under load, with a price-tag of as much as $3,000 for the higher-end factory overclocked models. Many of the AIB variants have already been leaked, all of them featuring a large triple-fan design and fancy RGB lighting. Here are some shots of the Gainwards cards:

Interestingly, despite the node shrink from 12nm to 7nm (we’re assuming here), the core clocks are actually somewhat lower than Turing. This can only be explained on the basis of excessive power consumption and heat. Most board partners appear to be recommending a 750W PSU at the very least, with 1000W being the ideal pick.

As you can see, both the cards are using a double eight-pin connector instead of the new 12-pin the Founders Edition cards have adopted. The cards support PCIe 4.0 and it appears that a good chunk of the performance gain will come from the faster memory and higher bandwidth. The RTX 3080 has a bandwidth of 760 GB/s while the RTX 3090 ups it to 936 GB/s. This is thanks to the much faster GDDR6X memory which runs at 19Gbps and the wider 320-bit bus for the 3080.

In comparison, the RTX 2080 Super has a bandwidth of *just* 496 GB/s, while the RTX 2080 Ti tops out at 616 GB/s. Regardless, a price tag of $3,000 for the RTX 3090 is more than a little worrying. If this turns out to be true, it’s likely that the RTX 3080 may cost the same as the RTX 2080 Ti, at $999.
