NVIDIA Postpones the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Indefinitely

According to sources close to Gamersnexus, NVIDIA has decided to postpone the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti indefinitely. The reason behind the hold up is, as you can expect, the limited supply of GPUs, most notably the higher-end parts. Along with the RTX 3080 Ti, the Super refresh of the Ampere lineup has also been put on hold till yields and/or supply improves enough to make the launch practical.

As we reported the other day, the RTX 30 series shortages are expected to continue thru the second quarter of 2021, possibly even into the second half of the year. The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is expected to be a 20 GB variant of the vanilla 3080, most likely with a few extra SMs enabled. If we consider the Super lineup, this time, the refreshed variants will likely come with a relatively lower performance uplift compared to Turing.

The GA104 die powering the RTX 3070 is already fully enabled, while the RTX 3080 isn’t that much further from the 3090 in terms of gaming performance. Squeezing a Ti as well as a Super variant in the already tiny gap will be difficult. As for the RTX 3060, NVIDIA could move it to the GA104 die (from GA106) and pair it with a wider 256-bit bus, but it’ll be hard to justify a card in that range considering that the RTX 3060 Ti already exists.

The budget range RTX 3050 and 3050 Ti, on the other hand, will likely land sometime in the coming months, before both the RTX 3080 Ti as well as the refreshed variants.
