NVIDIA Might Launch 5nm Hopper GPUs Just a Year After Ampere to Combat Navi

According to a Digitimes report, NVIDIA will be launching its Hopper graphics cards based on TSMC’s 5nm process just a year after Ampere (in 2021). While it’s too early to be sure of anything, this can be seen as an attempt to tackle AMD’s return to the high-end graphics card market. The upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles will both be based on the RDNA 2 design and like the Navi 2x GPUs will include hardware-level ray-tracing support. RTX (ray-tracing) and DLSS were the key advantages of NVIDIA’s Turing GPUs this generation. That will definitely not be the case in the coming months as both competitors prepare to launch their next-gen offerings.

The next battle will be fought on even ground with both Ampere and Navi 2x supporting ray-tracing and AI-based upscaling. As such, sheer raster performance and efficiency will decide who comes out on top. We already know that the Navi 2x cards will be based on TSMC’s 7nm+ node with 3x using the 5nm process. This probably left NVIDIA with no choice but to move ahead with the 7nm process for Ampere and 5nm for Hopper. I’m still not convinced about the launch date of the latter, but I suppose we’ll see.
