GeForce RTX 4080 vs. 4090: 4K Benchmarks

At 4K, you are truly GPU-bound, allowing the RTX 4090 to fully stretch its legs. Deltas of 14% grow to 26% as the Ada flagship marches ahead.

A Plague Tale is 26% faster on the RTX 4090, while Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassins’ Creed: Valhalla holds a lead of 20% over the RTX 4080 at 4K. Dying Light 2 is an exception, while F1 2022 is an abomination. The former nets 98 FPS average on the RTX 4090, just 6 FPS higher than the RTX 4080. F1 2022, on the other hand, is faster on the RX 7900 XTX, leaving a delta of 14% between the two GeForce cards.

Ghostwire Tokyo doesn’t play any differently, leaving a paltry 7 FPS gap between the GeForce RTX 4080 and 4090. Hitman 3 runs exceptionally well on the RTX 4090, granting it a lead of 29% over the RTX 4080, while Hogwarts Legacy extends it to 31% (at 4K).

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is another well-optimized title, averaging 186.5 FPS on the RTX 4090 and 145 FPS on the RTX 4080. A 29% uplift is nothing to scoff at. The Callisto Protocol is a whopping 40% faster than the RTX 4080 on an RTX 4090 with an average of 84 FPS and 119 FPS, respectively.

GeForce RTX 4080 vs. 4090: Ray Tracing Benchmarks

Moving to ray-traced benchmarks, we see NVIDIA killing the competition. The GeForce RTX 4090 is nearly 2x as fast as the RX 7900 XTX, leading the RTX 4080 by 24% in “A Plague Tale”. Crysis Remastered uses software-based ray tracing, granting the RTX 4090 a paltry single-digit advantage over the 4080.

Cyberpunk 2077 has an extensive implementation of RT. Here, we see the RTX 4090 net an average of 28% higher than the RTX 4080 and nearly 40% higher than the RX 7900 XTX. F1 2022 performs better on the RTX 4090 with ray-tracing enabled. It beats the RTX 4080 by 15% and the RX 7900 XTX by 15.5%.

Hogwarts Legacy now runs quite well on GeForce cards, with the RTX 4090 maintaining a lead of 16% over the RTX 4080. The Callisto Protocol doesn’t produce a repeat with a negligible difference between the two SKUs. Shadow of the Tomb Raider continues its “well-optimized” streak, averaging 229 FPS on the RTX 4090, up from 167.5 FPS on the RTX 4080 at 4K.
