NVIDIA announced its next-gen RTX 40 series graphics cards last month, and the RTX 4090 is set to launch next week, on the 12th. The RTX 4080 16GB and its 12GB variant (the RTX 4070 in all practical sense) are planned for a November and December release. The 3DMark TimeSpy benchmark of the RTX 4080 16GB has surfaced at the Chinese Chiphell forums showing a relatively mild upgrade over its predecessor:
Although the GPU appears to be overclocked to 3GHz (a substantial +450MHz bump over the official boost clock of 2,510MHz ), it’s just 60% faster than the RTX 3080. It’s worth noting that the GPU was configured with a TGP of 290W and a TBP of 333W, just a smidge over the official 320W limit. The memory was set to 22.4Gbps.
The RTX 4080 16GB is just 30% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti and leads the RTX 3090 by roughly 50%. Compared to the RTX 3080 12GB, we’re looking at a gain of 57%. Considering that these are purely raster workloads, this looks like a legit result, perhaps a bit on the higher side courtesy of an overclocked GPU core.
