NVIDIA DLSS 3 Boosts Frame Rates (FPS) by 3-4x but Can Lead to Loss of Detail and Increased Latency

One of the key highlights of NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series graphics cards is the added support for DLSS 3, an advanced upscaling technology that boosts performance by over 3x in supported titles. Digital Foundry tested it in a few popular games, namely Cyberpunk 2077, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Portal RTX. As you can see in the shots below, the GeForce RTX 4090 gets a massive 4x in Cyberpunk 2077 (with ray-tracing max) and 5x in Portal RTX.

On the downside, DLSS 3 leads to annoyances such as loss of detail, graphical artifacting, and a fat latency penalty. Fortunately, the inclusion of Reflex not only makes up for it but pulls it under the latency at native resolution:

The issues are mostly limited to complex textures, including vegetation, wiring, webs, grills, and rust. Portal RTX does pretty well with DLSS 3 while also conferring an FPS gain of over 500%.
