Next-Gen Zen 3 CPUs may Adopt the Ryzen 5000 Naming Scheme to Align with APU Nomenclature

AMD’s next-gen Zen 3 based CPUs may adopt the Ryzen 5000 naming scheme to unify the CPU and APU lineups from the same generation. This means that the 4th Gen Ryzen CPUs will be called the Ryzen 5000 series while the next-gen Cezanne APUs will be named the Ryzen 5000U|H for the notebook parts and 5000G for the desktop parts.

This little tit-bit comes from Patrick Schur on Twitter who claims that the next 8-core and 12-core AMD CPUs will be called the Ryzen 7 5800X and the Ryzen 9 5900X, respectively. In a world where Intel is making the nomenclature of every successive CPU lineup more complicated than the previous, this is good news for the mainstream consumer.

Now, the CPUs and APUs from a particular generation will use the same scheme, for example, the Ryzen 7 5700X and Ryzen 7 5700G/5700H/5700U. In comparison, present Ryzen APU naming makes it easier to confuse them with the next generation of CPUs, especially if you’re not keeping up with the news. For example, the Ryzen 7 4700H and the Ryzen 7 3700X are based on the same 7nm Zen 2 core architecture, yet the naming makes it seem as if the latter is a newer design.

Similarly, the Ryzen 9 4900H and the Ryzen 9 3900X are also based on the same architecture. The only difference is that the former comes paired with an integrated GPU for notebooks while the latter requires a dGPU to power up and is of course, for desktops. Even the desktop-grade APUs, the Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G is more or less identical to the Ryzen 7 3700X on the CPU side, but the naming makes it look like its successor.
