MSI has launched a new model of the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with 16Gbps GDDR6 memory out of the box. These are the fastest GDDR6 chips on the GPU market. Previously, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2080 Super held this record with 15.5Gbps chips. Other than the memory, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Gaming X Trio has the same specs as the rest of the 2080 Ti variants on the market.
MSI RTX 2080 Ti Family | GAMING TRIO | GAMING X TRIO | GAMING Z TRIO | LIGHTNING Z |
---|---|---|---|---|
CUDA Cores | 4352 | 4352 | 4352 | 4352 |
Boost Clock | 1635 MHz | 1755 MHz | 1755 MHz | 1770 MHz |
Memory Clock | 1750 MHz | 1750 MHz | 2000 MHz | 1750 MHz |
Effective Memory Clock | 14 Gbps | 14 Gbps | 16 Gbps | 14 Gbps |
Max Memory Bandwidth | 616 GB/s | 616 GB/s | 704 GB/s | 616 GB/s |
Strangely, the memory is even faster than the Lighting Z which is the flagship MSI card featuring multiple BIOS chips. The Gaming Z Trio comes with 16Gbps of memory while the latter has a factory memory speed of 14Gbps. That results in a nearly 100GB/s bandwidth gap between the two cards.

It’s not clear whether MSI is factory overclocking the chips or simply using faster GDDR6 chips, but considering this is an old card, the former is likely. Nevertheless, this should result in a healthy performance boost for the Gaming Z Trio over the reference model. (pckart.net) It will be especially helpful at 4K where the bandwidth requirements are much higher than usual.
