Intel’s Locked Non-K CPUs Can Now Be Overclocked to Over 5GHz: Up to 25% Performance Gain

A lot has changed with the launch of Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake processors. We’ve got a hybrid core architecture, better pricing, stronger competition, and most importantly a super-capable budget lineup under $300. The Core i5-12400 and Core i3-12100 are two stellar examples of budget CPUs that absolutely crush it in gaming workloads. That’s not all, however. The cherry on the cake is that you can even overclock the locked “K” series CPUs for the first time.

This was initially discovered by German overclocker der8auer who managed to overclock the Core i5-12400 to 5.3GHz using the BCLK on a B660 board. He followed this up by overclocking the Core i3-12100 and the Celeron G6900 by over 57% to 5.4GHz and 4.4GHz+, respectively, setting multiple records.

The ability to increase the BCLK is present in the BIOS settings of the ASUS STRIX B660G, B660F, and the ASRock B660 Steel Legend. Der8auer tested the 12th Gen Core CPUs on the ASUS ROG Maximus boards.
