Intel’s First GPU is Slower than the AMD Radeon RX 560, GTX 1050 Ti

More and more benchmarks of Intel’s first Xe GPU have started surfacing on the internet. However, till now we haven’t seen anything particularly impressive. The newest leak, a 3DMark score of the DG1 (a test-kit for developers) shows similar results.

As you can see, although the first generation of Xe GPUs (Gen12) is a big step up from existing Gen11 parts, it’s still quite behind contemporary lower-end discrete GPUs. Luckily for Intel, Gen12 will be limited to mobile processors as an integrated GPU. Keep in mind that DG1 won’t come to the consumer market. We’ll only be seeing its iGPU form in Tiger Lake powered notebooks with a sub-10W TDP.

That means Intel’s first generation of Xe GPUs (Gen12) will compete with the like of AMD’s 7nm Vega GPUs found in Renoir laptops. Looking at existing results, it appears that Tiger Lake (the CPUs with Gen12 Xe graphics) won’t have much difficulty in beating the 7nm Vega parts.

Overall, this means that although Intel has gained the lead in the integrated GPU market, the discrete graphics market is another story altogether. NVIDIA and AMD are both dug in pretty deep. Even the years-old GCN based Polaris cards easily crush Intel’s DG1. Considering this, it’s very likely that Intel will spend the first five years competing in the low-end integrated and sub-$150 discrete GPU market.
