Intel’s Core i9-13900K 45% Faster than the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X in Hogwarts Legacy (Update)

AMD hardware hasn’t fared well in Avalanche’s newly released blockbuster Hogwarts Legacy. The other day we reported that the Radeon RX 7900 XTX falls behind Intel’s notably cheaper Arc A770 in certain scenarios. It averages just 6 FPS in TPU’s test scene, followed by the RX 6900 XT with 5.1 FPS. The $999 RDNA 3 flagship is beaten by the $300 RTX 3060 and the four-year-old RTX 2080 Ti.

Update: Upon changing the motherboard to the ASUS ROG Strix X670E-E Gaming WiFi, the Ryzen 9 7950X is 19% faster. After the update, the 7950X ends up between the 12900K and 5800X3D. The Core i9-13900K maintains a lead of 22% over its Raphael rival.

Even Intel’s Arc A770 is faster than the top Radeon GPU. It averages 17 FPS, making it nearly 3x as fast as the RX 7900 XTX. Meanwhile, the GeForce RTX 4080 is over 4x faster than the RX 7900 XTX, and the RTX 4090 extends the lead to 6x. The CPU performance on the Ryzen side isn’t looking too good, either.

The Ryzen 9 7950X, when paired with the GeForce RTX 4090, nets 65 FPS at 1080p RT Ultra (DLSS set to performance). Its Raptor Lake-S rival, the Core i9-13900K, is way faster, averaging 94 FPS with the same configuration. These benchmarks were conducted with the E-cores on the 13900K disabled and a single CCD operational on the 7950X.

Both processors are faster with these tweaks. The Raphael flagship faces fewer stalls due to all the threads being close together on the same CCD, while the Raptor Lake-S part doesn’t assign any thread to one of the slower Gracemont “E” cores.

It’s worth noting that the Ryzen 9 7950X is slower than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in this title, losing to the Core i9-12900K by 20%. CapFrameX further notes that GeForce drivers confer a significant driver overhead, reducing the performance by up to 9%.

As many users have noted, the performance varies greatly from scene to scene, and you won’t always see these kinds of deltas. That said, you’ll see the difference in demanding scenarios, where the game tends to stutter due to poor lows.
