Intel XeSS Looks Impressive, but DLSS is Still the King of Upscaling Technologies; Lower FPS on AMD/NVIDIA GPU

Intel’s XeSS upscaling technology is finally available to gamers through select titles, including Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Death Stranding, and Hitman 3. As expected, it is still far from mature, offering less than satisfactory performance on lower-end (AMD) GPUs and producing artifacts at lower quality presets. Furthermore, the frame rate scaling is notably lower than DLSS 2 and FSR 2.0 on the GeForce RTX 30 and Radeon RX 6000 parts.

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X

On lower-end RDNA 2 GPUs, the performance takes a steep hit instead of improving with XeSS. This is due to the lower DP4a (NN acceleration using INT8) performance on these parts. The RX 6500 XT, for example, drops under 20 FPS when XeSS is enabled and set to any preset.

The performance on Arc GPUs will be better, maybe even on par with DLSS 2/FSR 2. Still, with DLSS 3 promising over thrice the performance as native and developer adoption higher than XeSS even before release, this will be a tough road for Intel.
