Intel Dumps 8th Gen Coffee Lake Processors to Make way for Comet Lake-S

Intel has decided to discontinue its 8th Gen desktop processor lineup, codenamed Coffee Lake which seems to be a hasty move to make way for the newly announced Comet Lake-S chips. The discontinued chips include the then-popular Core i7-8700K, 8600K, and mildly successful 8086K. The entire list is as follows:

The list consists of over 40 processors from the Coffee Lake family. Like Kaby Lake and Comet Lake, these chips were also based on the 14nm Skylake core. Intel’s strategy over the past several years has been to increase core counts and frequencies across all segments to keep up with the increasing competition from AMD’s Ryzen processors, and for the most part, it has worked.

The 10th Gen Comet Lake-S lineup is finally expected to be the last generation based on Skylake. Rocket Lake is suspected to be a backport of Willow Cove, although, the 14nm is going to be retained for another generation. The 12th Gen Alder Lake chips will be the first 10nm based desktop processor family from Intel, with a supposed launch in late 2022 or early 2023.
