Intel Continues to be the Largest Semiconductor Company, AMD Breaks Into the Top 15 (In Terms of Sales)

Intel retained the position of the largest semiconductor company in the first quarter of 2021 in terms of sales, followed by Samsung, TSMC, and SK Hynix. The positions of the three firms were unchanged compared to the previous year, and are expected to see a bit of movement the next. Intel’s shipments are expected to drop while Samsung will likely gain some additional share, leading to the two swapping places. SK Hynix is also speculated to grow its presence in the NAND segment, but it’s not going to be overtaking TSMC anytime soon.

Down the ladder, we have Qualcomm, Broadcom, and NVIDIA, all US-based companies. All three gained a rank to move slightly higher up the chart. Furthermore, all three are fabless chipmakers relying on TSMC or Samsung for their supply of wafers. MediaTek, another fabless chipmaker and client of TSMC, gained six places to directly enter the list of top-10 largest semiconductor firms in 20213.

The largest gain, however, came from AMD. Yet another fabless chipmaker and a client of TSMC, the company gained seven places to reach the #11 rank, beating Apple, Infineon, ST, and Kioxia. The company is expected to race past MediaTek and TI by 2022, landing right behind archrival NVIDIA.
