Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake-S 10nm+++ Documentation Released: To Compete with 5nm Zen 4 Based Ryzen CPUs

The design documents and drivers for Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake-S desktop processors are reportedly being shared among developers and board partners.

While the file itself doesn’t shed much light on the processor, other than the socket: LGA1700, we know multiple things about Intel’s first 10nm desktop processor. Firstly, it’s rumored to be based on the third iteration of the 10nm node (10nm+++) and will leverage the Golden Cove cove (successor to Willow Cove powering Tiger Lake). As such, it’ll be a significantly faster chip compared to the 10th Gen Comet Lake-S parts which still use the 5 year old Skylake core (14nm).

A massively upgraded IPC and core clocks as high as 5GHz thanks to a more mature form of the 10nm process mean that Intel should be able to retain it’s gaming and single-threaded lead over AMD. Or at the very least level with the Zen 3/Zen 4 based Ryzen processors. It’s interesting to note that by then AMd will have moved to the 5nm node, so it’ll still hold an advantage in terms of efficiency and process lead.

Alder Lake is expected to land sometime in 2022.
