Gears Tactics (PC) will be Optimized for Intel’s Xe GPU Architecture; VRS and Async Compute

Gears Tactics, an upcoming turn-based Gears of War spin-off by way of XCOM is expected to run great on Intel’s upcoming Xe-LP graphics cards. This is because Microsoft’s taken time to collaborate directly with Team Blue to optimize code on this first-party title so that it runs optimally on Intel’s newest graphics architecture.

Gears: Tactics is set to arrive on April 28th, on both Xbox and PC. The title will arrive on Xbox Game Pass, making that the cheapest way to get hold of it (assuming you can actually get Game Pass to work).

What is the scale of the PC-and Intel Xe-centric optimizations? Gears Tactics is set to feature Variable Rate Shading and Asynchronous compute. Both of these are key performance-oriented features that’ll help Gears Tactics run well on Intel Xe GPUs.

Variable Rate Shading (VRS) dynamically scales the shading rate across parts of the screen, depending on what’s visible and what’s not. This results in substantial performance gains with little to no impact on image quality. Asynchronous compute allows supported GPUs to run compute and graphics workloads simultaneously, increasing GPU utilization and improving performance.

Gears Tactics is looking like a full-fledged Gears Title–and it’s got a 45GB storage requirement to boot. Minimum specifications are quite forgiving, however: you can get away as little as an AMD FX-6000 series CPU and a GTX 750 Ti. You’ll need an RTX 2080 or better for the full-fat 4K experience, however.
