Dell G5 15 SE Gaming Laptop Launched w/ 8-Core AMD Ryzen 9 4900H APU and Radeon RX 5600M GPU: Starting @ $830

Dell today launched the G5 15 SE, an all-AMD gaming laptop featuring the Ryzen 4000 “Renoir” lineup and a Radeon RX 5600M discrete GPU. On the CPU side, you can choose from three options:

  • Ryzen 5 4600H (6 Cores|12 Threads up to 4GHz)
  • Ryzen 7 4800H (8 Cores|16 Threads up to 4.2GHz)
  • Ryzen 9 4900H (8 Cores|16 Threads up to 4.4GHz)

The differences between the three extend beyond the core counts and operating clocks. The integrated GPUs are also different across the three APUs. While the 4600H features a Vega 6 with a clock speed of 1500MHz, the 4800H is paired with a Vega 7 running at 1600MHz. Finally, the flagship Ryzen 9 4900H has the Vega 8 with a boost clock o 1750MHz. This part is known to be faster than even the NVIDIA MX350 discrete GPU that is being paired with many budget laptops nowadays.

As far as the discrete GPU options are concerned, there is only the Navi based Radeon RX 5600M to choose from. For now, Alienware isn’t including the 5700M or the 5500M. The RX 5600M is a tad bit faster than NVIDIA’s popular offering, the RTX 2060 (mobile). Of course you don’t get RTX support, but the raster performance is on the high side.

Like most other gaming laptops, the Dell G5 15 also comes with a 1080p IPS display. Rather fitting considering the dGPU. There is a 60Hz option with 220 nits of brightness and a 144Hz variant with 300 nits brightness. My suggestion would be go with the former if you’re opting for a Ryzen 5 4600H while the latter is best suited for the higher-end APUs.

Coming to storage, there are single and dual storage options. The former ranged from a 128GB NVMe SSD to a 1TB drive. The dual-storage option is rather redundant with two NVMe based 512GB SSDs.

For the input, you get a full-size, spill-resistant keyboard with four-zone RGB and a Game Shift Key at F7. The laptop is powered by a 51 WHr, 3 cell battery for the lower-end variants, and a 68 WHr, 4-cell battery for the full-fledged model.

The laptop has modest dimensions with a thickness of 0.85 inches, weightiness in at just 2.5 kg for the starting configuration. The Dell G5 15 is priced at a very affordable $830 for the starting model.
