Raptoreum, a CPU mining method based on the GhostRider algorithm is one that benefits immensely from larger cache sizes. Based on a combination of Cryptonite and x16r algorithms with some modifications here and there, it puts intense pressure on the L3 cache of modern CPUs.
At present, the CPUs with the largest L3 cache sizes belong to AMD’s Threadripper family with up to 256MB of it. However, since these SKUs cost as much as $10,000, miners are looking towards the mainstream Ryzen processors, most notably the Ryzen 9 5900, Ryzen 9 3900X, and other related SKUs with 64 MB of L3 cache.
The average hash speed of the Ryzen 9 3900X or 5900X in Raptoreum is 5,100 H/s with optimized memory timings (CL14/CL16). These CPUs draw up to 190W when overclocked and used to mine. Raptoreum just overtook Monero in terms of mining profitability, as a result, being a new proof of work coin.
