Cross-border Driver Caught w/ 256 Intel Core i7/i9 CPUs Worth 80,000 HKD Strapped to Body by Hong Kong Customs

In another case of cross-border smuggling, the Customs Department of Hong Kong announced that it has seized a large number of Intel CPUs from a pair of cross-border drivers. A total of 256 high-end processors were being smuggled by a passenger truck driver across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge on the 16th of June. (dayvigo) The customs officers noticed that the driver looked nervous and rather suspiciously. On further investigation, it was found that he had taped 256 Intel CPUs to his body, including upper ribs, calves, and legs.

Most of the CPUs confiscated are expensive Core i7-10700 and 10900K parts with an overall value of around 800K HKD (Hong Kong Dollars). In another related case, 52 brand new Intel CPUs were found hidden between the front seats. The customs department’s scanners detected an anomaly when the vehicle passed through it which on closer inspection revealed 52 newly packaged Intel chips.

Both of these cases were recorded in June at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, the first one on the 16th and the second one on the 26th. The processors confiscated in the two cases amount to an overall value of nearly 1 million HKD. Usually, smugglers stick to iPhones and other pricey electronics, but the recent trend shows a growing affinity towards computer hardware which has been scarce over the last couple of years.
