AMD’s Ryzen Desktop CPU Market Share Grows by 21% in Q1 2024; Mobile/Server Flat

AMD’s Ryzen desktop processors had a healthy first quarter, increasing their market share by 21% in Q1 2024. This was the best quarter the Ryzen desktop lineup has had in nearly two years. Team Red’s CPU market share in the segment grew from 19.8% in Q4 2023 to 23.9% at the end of Q1 2024. The Ryzen desktop market share rose 4.7 points YoY, up from 19.2% in Q1 2023.

Much of these gains came from the Ryzen 8000 “Phoenix” launch aimed at AIOs and business PCs. In the desktop DIY segment, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has consistently led sales charts for over a year, backed by the 7600/7600F. Unfortunately, the mobility and server numbers aren’t so rosy as both remained flat for the first quarter.

The first quarter generally witnesses a seasonal dip in PC shipments, so these numbers are a welcome surprise. The mobility processor market saw a 1-point decline quarter-over-quarter but increased by 3 points year-over-year. It settled at 19.3% at the end of Q1 2024, down from 20.3% the previous quarter, but up from 16.2% the prior year. The launch of the Ryzen 8040 family partially offset seasonal declines, but not completely.

The Epyc server segment gained 5.6 points YoY, to 23.6% at the end of Q1 2024, up from 23.1% and 18% the previous quarter and year, respectively. The 4th Gen Epyc Genoa CPUs continued to enjoy rapid adoption, backed by the Zen 4c-based “Bergamo” chips in the Cloud market. AMD’s overall client CPU share grew to 20.6%, up from 20.2% last quarter and 17% last year.

AMD has a big year ahead with the impending launch of the Ryzen 9000 and Ryzen HX AI “Strix Point” processors. Hefty IPC upgrades, powerful NPUs, and potent iGPU performance are some expectations from Zen 5 and its derivatives.
