AMD’s Ryzen 4000 Desktop CPUs “Vermeer” to Retain the B450 Chipset

So, it turns out that AMD will indeed be retaining its AM4 socket for the next-gen Ryzen 4000 desktop processors. That’s not it though. Both the B450 as well as the X470 chipsets will support the Vermeer CPUs through a microcode update. This was confirmed by an XMG employee on a Reddit thread:

Origin PC EON15-X vs Clevo XMG Apex 15: Comparing the Fastest “Desktop-Grade” Laptops on the Planet

The post shares the specifications and product info about Clevo’s XMG Apex 15 laptop that features AMD’ Ryzen 9 3900 and 3950X on a mini-ITX B450 board. The latter is expected to run in the low-power Eco Mode, with a TDP of 65W. One of the advantages of the XMG Apex 15 is that just like a desktop PC, you can upgrade the internal components like the CPU, GPU and memory without requiring any special products or tools. Amongst the specs, you can see that there’s mention of the Ryzen 4000 series and that they’d be compatible with the B450 chipset featured on the motherboard via a microcode update.

While there were already rumors that AMD’s Ryzen 4000 desktop CPUs codenamed Vermeer would retain the AM4 socket, this confirms that they’ll also support all the existing chipsets, including the B450 and X470 chipsets that were launched several years back with the 2nd Gen Ryzen processors.

On the other hand, you’ve got Intel changing the socket as well as the chipsets every other generation. The 10th Gen Comet Lake-S CPUs, despite being another 14nm Skylake rehash is going to use a brand new LGA1200 socket and the 400 series chipsets. Then a couple of years from now, when Intel’s 10nm Alder Lake parts finally come to the mainstream desktop market, the company is most likely going to change the chipset once again to adapt to the new process node and core architecture. And then you think why people love AMD.
