AMD’s Ryzen 3 3100 Overclocked to 6GHz on all Cores

The AMD Ryzen 3 3100 recently launched at just US$99, delivering Kaby Lake i7-7700K levels of performance at a fraction of the price. Now, overclockers have succeeded in pushing the 3rd generation Ryzen processor to an unprecedented 5.9 GHz on liquid nitrogen. TSAIK managed the feat on an MSI Tomahawk X570 AM4+ motherboard. The overclocker also holds the record for the highest Zen 2 OC, a hair past 6 GHz on the Ryzen 9 3950X. Zen 2 CPUs aren’t known to overclock that well. AMD’s precision boost feature already pushes the chips to their limits.

The fact that an AMD Ryzen 3 3100 could clock so close to the record Zen 2 overclock is good news for budget builders looking to get a bit more out of their 3100. The chips seem to be binned decently enough. As a four-core, eight-thread processor, the Ryzen 3 3100 offers remarkable value in the here and now. However, with the upcoming ninth gen consoles set to sport 8 Zen 2 cores, we aren’t sure how the value proposition will look in a year’s time.
