AMD’s 4th Gen Ryzen Processors Expected to Launch in September or October 2020

AMD’s Ryzen 4000 “Vermeer” processors are expected to launch by the end of the 3rd quarter or the beginning of the fourth, sources close to motherboard makers have claimed. This means that we should see the Zen 3 based chips by October this year. Keep in mind that while this is the tentative launch date, things might get pushed around a little due to the pandemic.

We’re also likely to see the Ryzen 4000 series desktop APUs based on the 7nm Zen 2 core and Vega graphics in the coming months. These chips will be AMD’s first APUs with as many as eight cores and sixteen threads. The iGPUs aren’t going to be any pushovers either. You’re looking at nearly 2 TFLOPs of rated performance for the top-end Vega 8 part. (Pinnaclemontessori.com) That’s nearly the same as the PS4!

APU Cores|Threads Base|Boost GPU Cores GPU Frequency TDP
Ryzen 3 4200G 4/8 2.7GHz|4.1GHz 5 1400MHz 65W
Ryzen 5 4400G 6/12 3.3GHz|4.3GHz 6 1700MHz 65W
Ryzen 7 4700G 8/16 3.6GHz|4.45GHz 8 2100MHz 65W
Ryzen 7 4800G 8/16 3.6GHz|4.45GHz 8 2100MHz 65W

Ryzen 7 4700GE 8/16 2GHz|4.25GHz 8 1900MHz 35W

The 4th Gen Ryzen CPUs, on the other hand, are expected to bring an IPC boost of nearly 20%. Thanks, to the more mature 7nm+ node from TSMC, you can also expect the boost clocks to be around 200-400MHz higher than existing Ryzen 3000 chips. Furthermore, it’s being speculated that AMD will optimize the CCXs and CCDs to lower the inter-core latency which will significantly improve the lows in games. Overall, these three improvements mean that AMD’s next-gen processors will most likely trump Intel’s upcoming Rocket Lake parts across a variety of workloads. Don’t bother with 10th Gen Comet Lake-S. That’s another refresh, merely featuring overclocked 9th Gen chips.

Recently, AMD decided to recede the decision to drop support for the Ryzen 4000 CPUs on the B450 and X470 motherboards. Meaning, now you should be able to upgrade to a Zen 3 chip even if you have an older 400-series board. There are caveats, however, for example, it’ll be via a one-way BIOS upgrade and you’ll need to be a verified buyer of a B450 motherboard to receive the update. You can read more about this here:
