AMD Ryzen 9 7845HX is 31% and 90% Faster than the Intel Core i9-12900HX and Ryzen 9 6900HX: Fastest Notebook CPU in PassMark

AMD’s first chiplet-based notebook lineup Dragon Range was announced at CES 2023. As the launch draws near, we’ve started seeing leaks and benchmarks related to these high-end notebook processors across various databases. PassMark is one such example. The 12-core Ryzen 9 7845HX has conquered this website’s notebook and portable CPU performance chart, beating every other processor in the process.

The Ryzen 9 7845HX features a dual-die design package with 12 Zen 4 cores running at a base clock of 3GHz and a boost of 5.2GHz. It’s the same SKU as the Ryzen 9 7900X with a reduced TDP and optimized power tables. Courtesy of the higher core counts, it registers a massive lead of 90% over the Ryzen 9 6900HX, the current fastest AMD mobile chip.

Compared to Intel’s Core i9-12900HX, we’re looking at a performance lead of 31%, despite featuring fewer cores (16 vs 12). The Ryzen 9 7845HX is also 78% faster than Apple’s newly launched M2 Max SKU in the PassMark database in the multi-threaded benchmark. With that said, the Zen 4 SKU is a 45W part with a peak of 75W or higher.

It’s worth noting that Intel is prepping its Raptor Lake-HX processors with up to 24 cores (8P and 16E) for the gaming notebook markets. The Core i9-13980HX will have a peak boost clock of 5.6GHz, versus 5.4GHz on the Ryzen 9 7945HX, the Dragon Range flagship. All that performance does come at a higher TDP ceiling of 157W. Both the APU families should hit the retail market next month alongside NVIDIA’s RTX 40 series graphics cards.
