AMD Ryzen 7 4800H|Radeon RX 5500M Laptop 30% Faster than Intel i9-9980HK|NVIDIA GTX 1650: 3DMark

With the coming of the Ryzen 4000 APUs and Navi GPUs, all-AMD gaming laptops have become a viable alternative to expensive Intel|NVIDIA offerings. On the CPUs side, we’ve got the Ryzen 4000H lineup (APUs): 4600H, 4800H and the 4900HS. As for the mobile discrete GPUs, the options are comparatively fewer: Radeon RX 5500M and the 5600M. The former competes with the NVIDIA GTX 1650 and the latter locks horns with the GTX 1660 Ti-powered notebooks.

Reputed leaker, _rogame has shared the 3DMark score of a gaming laptop packing a Ryzen 7 4800H and a Radeon RX 5500M. Putting this All-AMD laptop side-by-side against an Intel Core i9-9980HK|NVIDIA GTX 1650 competitor, the results we get are nothing short of impressive:

Overall, the Ryzen|Radeon combo is 30% faster than the Intel|NVIDIA alternative. Having a closer look at the results, we can see that there’s not much difference between the two on the CPU side. The Ryzen 7 4800H is ahead by just 5.6% in the physics test, but in the graphics test, the Radeon RX 5500M is a hefty 30-35% faster than the GTX 1650. This culminates in an overall lead of 30% for the Renoir laptop.

The Core i9-9980HK is known to throttle and perform worse than expected in thermally-restricted scenarios. Considering that it’s an 8-core part like the 4800H running at a higher clock, it’s most likely beat the Renoir chip in many cases. However, the GPU performance is a good indicator of what to expect from the 5500M. It beats the GTX 1650 by a good margin, all the while being priced in the same bracket.

At present, AMD Ryzen|NVIDIA GTX 16 series laptops are quite popular due to their excellent price-performance ratio. With mobile Navi GPUs like the 5500M and 5600M, AMD will have a chance to maximize its profits from the OEM space and gain a larger foothold in the discrete GPU space.

AMD’s Ryzen 4000 powered laptops are expected to hit retail by the end of this month. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, shipments might, however, get delayed. There’s no official word from AMD as of now. We’ll keep you posted. Cheers!
