AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs for Gaming Laptops to be ~30% Faster than 10th Gen Intel Core i7 (Ice Lake)

Intel’s 10th Gen Ice Lake CPUs seem to be the company’s finest chips at present. Based on the much-awaited 10nm node and featuring the Gen11 iGPU, they beat the Ryzen Picasso competition by leaps and bounds. However, the latter is based on the older Zen+ core, rather than the Zen 2 design that the Ryzen 3000 CPUs feature.

There’s some good news for AMD fans. It seems that AMD is working on bringing its 7nm Zen 2 cores to the laptop space to take on Intel’s new Ice Lake chips. Best of all, we’ll be seeing octa-core CPUs, a first for a mobile Ryzen chip. Even the Intel Ice Lake parts top out at four cores and run at rather tame clocks.

Going by the leaked 3DMark results, Intel will most likely be facing the same heat in the laptop space that they have to deal with, in the desktop DIY market every day. According to preliminary results, the AMD Ryzen 7 4770U will be at least 34% faster than the Intel Ice lake flagship, the Core i7-1068NG7.

The above 3DMark result tells us that Intel’s advantage in the mobile space is about to come to an end. The combined score seems to be much better for the Core i7 but that’s most likely an error as the test-breakdown largely favors the Renoir chip. Perhaps because the Vega 16 GPU isn’t recognized.

Furthermore, it’s important to note that the Ryzen 7 4700U APU is paired with an 1800MHz memory kit which could be severely limiting its full potential. The presence of the Infinity Fabric between the chiplets makes the Ryzen chips quite sensitive to memory. This ought to be taken care of closer to release. AMD is expected to reveal the Renoir based Ryzen 4000 APUs for laptops at CES next month. We’ll keep you posted.
