May was an excellent month for AMD’s CPU division. The chipmaker’s share in the consumer processor market continued to grow, reaching another all-time high of 30.13% amongst Steam gamers. This is the highest number of Steam users with AMD processors in nearly 2 decades.
By the end of the first quarter last year, AMD was responsible for just over 20% of processors on the Steam platform. The same figure has now grown to over 30%, a gain of 50% in just a year. Furthermore, the rate at which the chipmaker was gaining share remained under 0.50%. This year that has increased by more than 2x to close to 1%.
Another interesting point that can be made from these figures is that all of Intel’s top-end parts are in the end for the month of May 2021, with SKUs with a base clock of 3.3-3.7 GHz seeing a rather sizable drop of 0.20%. Traditionally, SKUs in the 2-3.7GHz range have performed the best for Intel which is why this is a bit surprising. This means that none of the Rocket Lake-S processors, even the budget-grade Core i5-11400F sold rather poorly in May. On AMD’s end, processors with a base clock of 3.3 to 3.7GHz+ brought in the most sales which means mostly higher-end SKUs such as the Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 7 5800X, and Ryzen 9 5900X, with the older 3600 also selling rather well.
