When AMD launched its Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards, we were all disappointed by the lack of an RTX 4090 competitor. The RX 7900 XTX battles the RTX 4080 while the 7900 XT locks horns with the RTX 4070 Ti. Since then, there have been several rumors of an architectural flaw limiting the Navi 31 die under 3GHz. Many have tried pushing the RX 7900 XT to its original frequency target of 3GHz+ but were met with unreasonably higher TBPs of over 500W.
A brave overclocker has achieved an incredible feat by overclocking the Radeon RX 7900 XTX to 3.3GHz. The GPU is nearly as fast as the NVIDIA RTX 4090 at this operating clock across most gaming workloads. Be informed that this overclock required a BIOS modification and a few tweaks to the PCB of the graphics card.
The overclocked RX 7900 XTX posted the following scores across the three popular 3DMark synthetic benchmarks:
Both the TimeSpy scores are very close to that of a GeForce RTX 4090. A stock Radeon RX 7900 XTX posts 29,215 in Time Spy and 14,861 in Time Spy Extreme, making the overclocked GPU roughly 30% faster. We’re looking at a tier-level upgrade with this overclock which is simply phenomenal. The RTX 4090 nets approximately 39K and 21K points in Time Spy and Time Spy Extreme, placing it inches ahead of the overclocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
Port Royal is a ray-traced benchmark in which Radeon GPUs fall behind their GeForce counterparts. The overclocked 7900 XTX still puts a respectable showing, scoring 20,492 points, compared to 16K on the stock card. The RTX 4090 yields 25K points in the same benchmark. A delta of 25% versus a GPU that is priced 60% higher is very bearable.
