AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT to Reportedly have Supply Issues at Launch

Turns out that AMD’s graphics card supply won’t be all that different from NVIDIA’s. As per an ASUS company rep, the inventory for the Radeon RX 6800 XT will be quite limited, with the RX 6800 seeing relatively better supply. He expects the cards to run out of stock minutes after launch, similar to what we saw with the NVIDIA RTX 3080/3090.

It will be quite limited: more RX6800, fewer 6800XT … as with basically all graphics cards now, we expect that everything will be gone in a few minutes so you need to hang on the lock.

Then it is 1-2 weeks later until we start delivering our Partners cards, too early to say what the supply looks like there, but the demand will probably continue to be great.

Supply should get better as the board partner cards launch a few weeks after the reference models. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a potential Big Navi supply shortage. Earlier, a few other sources had indicated the same.

With a lot of strain on TSMCs 7nm capacity: Ryzen 3000, Ryzen 5000, Big Navi, next-gen consoles, and smartphone SoCs, AMD will have to prioritize its products to meet supply and fiscal targets. The Ryzen 5000 chips (launched yesterday) are already out of stock at most retailers. Although AMD has assured continued supply, it won’t be surprising if the situation takes a while to improve.

As the profit margins for the Big Navi cards are lower than the Ryzen 5000 CPUs, their inventory will likely be worse, in part due to the use of that massive Infinity Cache. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.
