AMD Publishes Beta Drivers with Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling

After NVIDIA’s release of the first DirectX12 Ultimate driver update, AMD has followed suit with support for one of the other primary highlights of the release, Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling. This feature basically lets the GPU take control of the VRAM management from the OS for lower latency and efficient utilization.

In the case of NVIDIA’s cards, we saw a marginal gain in memory-bound titles such as Assassins’ Creed, with the rest seeing no change in performance despite slightly lower VRAM consumption. AMD’s Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.5.1 Beta brings the same feature to Red GPUs. However, unlike NVIDIA’s release, this is a beta driver with limited device support. Only the Navi 10 based GPUs are supported while Navi 14 and 12, as well as the older GCN based parts, missing out, at least for the time being.

By moving scheduling responsibilities from software into hardware, this feature has the potential to improve GPU responsiveness and to allow additional innovation in GPU workload management in the future
