AMD Confirms the Radeon RX 7800 XT is Coming Soon: 3,840 Cores, 16GB VRAM at $599 (≈RTX 4070 But Faster)

During its Q1 2023 earnings call, AMD reported its first loss in years. The chipmaker’s gaming revenue was down to 6% YoY to $1.8 billion (from $1.9 billion in Q1 2022). Its operating margin fell to 18%, from $358 million to $314 million (19%) in the same quarter last year. Although the yearly client sales were down, quarterly Radeon 6000 and 7900 GPUs grew quarter-over-quarter. The RX 7900 XTX, in particular, was a bestseller despite maintaining its MSRP.

There have been rumors aplenty about the Radeon RX 7800 XT and its lower-end RDNA 3 siblings. Like the Navi 31-based RX 7900 XTX/XT, the RX 7800 XT will also be a chiplet design with four 6nm MCDs (Memory Complex Dies) and one 5nm GCD (Graphics Compute Die). We’re looking at a core count of 3,840 across 60 Compute Units (CUs) paired with a 16GB VRAM via a 256-bit bus.

We saw strong sales of our high-end Radeon 7900 XTX GPUs in the first quarter, and we’re on track to expand our RDNA 3 GPU portfolio with the launch of new mainstream Radeon 7000 series GPUs this quarter.

AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su confirmed that the company is on track to launch the remainder of the Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs this quarter, vis-à-vis the RX 7800 XT, RX 7700 XT, and RX 7600 XT. This doesn’t necessarily mean that all three SKUs will be launched this quarter but seeing how NVIDIA RTX 4070/4070 Ti is out, the RX 7800 XT makes sense.

According to MLID, the RX 7800 XT will cost $599, the same as the RTX 4070, but offer substantially higher rasterization performance (≈RTX 4070 Ti). Ray-tracing, however, should be faster on the GeForce RTX cards. The RX 7700 XT, 7700, and 7600 will allegedly cost $499, $429, and $329, respectively. The first two will land later this month (or the next), while the latter will launch next quarter.
