Alder Lake-P (Mobile) CPUs to Feature one PCIe 5.0 x8 Lane or two PCIe 4.0 x4

We have some new info regarding Intel’s 12th gen Alder Lake-P mobile CPUs (courtesy of Komachi). Turns out that even the low-power mobile lineup based on the Golden Cove and Gracemont cores will support PCIe.0 protocol. This data was obtained from Coreboot which indicates the potential PCIe configurations for Alder Lake-P.

Intel’s CPU core roadmap now includes a new Alder Lake performance hybrid architecture that will combine Golden Cove and Gracemont cores in one highly efficient product arriving in 2021. At Architecture Day in August 2020, Intel Chief Architect Raja Koduri, Intel fellows and architects provided details on the progress Intel is making. (Credit: Intel Corporation)

From what we already knew, it was rumored that Alder Lake would support either PCIe 4.0 or 5.0 or perhaps, both. It looks like those rumors were indeed true and the Alder Lake-P mobile platform will support one PCIe 5.0 x8 lane or two PCIe 4.0 x4 lanes. Given this is the low-power mobile platform, it’s possible that the desktop platform may also come with full-fledged PCIe 5.0 support along with DDR5 memory.

The mobile P series Alder Lake-S CPUs are expected to max out at 14 cores, with six high-performance Golden Cove cores and eight low-power Gracemont core. The desktop lineup is expected to max out at 16 cores, with 12 high-performance Golden Cove cores and four low-power Gracemont cores which is fitting considering that most DIYers are looking for maximum performance rather than efficiency.
